Have you thought about a Tennessee elopement?
Choosing to elope means getting married intentionally. It means planning a wedding in a way that actually reflects how you want to experience the day. And Tennessee tends to surprise people (in the best way!)
From waterfalls and forest trails to mountain overlooks and city-based experiences, there’s a wide range of environments to build a celebration around. Whether you’re planning something private, inviting a small group, or blending the two, Tennessee gives you flexibility without sacrificing beauty.
And it doesn’t have to mean hiking for miles or pushing yourself physically to get there. Many locations offer incredible views with minimal effort, or creative ways to access more remote-feeling places comfortably.
The best Tennessee elopement locations aren’t just about where you stand for your vows. They shape the pace of the day and how you move through it. The best locations offer moments that unfold along the way.
Read on to explore a range of locations and what each one can offer your experience.

Tennessee Elopement Locations: Water & Waterfall Settings
If you’re looking for a water elopement, Tennessee has your number:
Greeter Falls:
If a waterfall setting is what you’re drawn to, Greeter Falls is one of the most well-known options in Tennessee.
Located in South Cumberland State Park, this area offers access to multiple waterfalls within a relatively short loop trail: Upper Greeter Falls, Lower Greeter Falls, and Boardtree Falls. Each has a slightly different feel depending on the season and water flow.
The hike is considered moderate, but manageable for many couples. For those open to a bit of movement, the payoff is a layered landscape. It has multiple ceremony and photo locations in one area.
For couples wanting a more complete experience, there are also unique nearby stays. Take a look at my Enchanted Canopy Collection™. This collection allows you to build a more relaxed, multi-day celebration rather than a single stop.
Pro Tip:
When the water flow is lower, swimming is possible! For stronger waterfall flow, aim for late winter into early spring.

Falling Water Falls:
Falling Water Falls offers one of the more accessible waterfall viewpoints in Tennessee.
A short walk (about 0.3 miles) leads to an overlook above the falls. While you don’t see the full waterfall from this angle, the overlook itself is the highlight, with a dramatic drop and expansive views.
The area is exposed, and the footing can be uneven, so awareness is important. Parking is limited, which makes this a better fit for a “just us” style elopement rather than a larger group.
For couples who want something visually striking without committing to a longer hike, this is a strong option. The location is accessible, though the trail is a bit rocky. The overlook is an exposed space, so watch your step! The parking is extremely limited, so keep that in mind. If you choose these falls, I would recommend this spot for a “Just Us” elopement experience.
Rainbow Falls:
Rainbow Falls often shows up in searches…but it’s not a recommended location.
Access is not officially permitted, and the route down is unsafe. There have been multiple rescues in recent years, and ongoing erosion has made the area a conservation concern.
While you may still see it listed online, it’s best to avoid it.
The good news is that Tennessee has no shortage of waterfall locations that are both accessible and appropriate for elopements. If you’re drawn to this kind of setting, there are better options that still give you the experience. I’d love to help you find the right one for you.
Hit the Rapids!
If you want to bring movement into your experience, Tennessee also offers whitewater rafting options. These options are on the rivers like the Ocoee, Pigeon, and Nolichucky.
You can build this into your day as an activity rather than the ceremony itself, something to experience together before or after your vows.
There are options ranging from beginner-friendly sections to more technical rapids, depending on how active you want the experience to be.
Cruise a River!
If you’re drawn to water but want something more relaxed, a private boat, kayak, or paddleboarding experience can offer a quieter way to incorporate it.
In areas like Chattanooga, there are also riverboat options that allow for a more structured but still intimate experience with a small group.

National + State Parks for Tennessee Elopements
National and state parks offer some of the most flexible and scenic options for elopements in Tennessee.
With forests, waterfalls, mountain views, and lakes, these spaces allow you to shape the experience in a way that feels natural to you, whether that’s something simple and quiet or more layered over time.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park:
Located about 45 minutes from Knoxville and a couple of hours from Chattanooga, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most well-known elopement locations in the state.
There are designated ceremony locations that are easy to access and work well for both small groups and more private ceremonies.
Pro Tip:
Backcountry weddings and portraits are not permitted (updated May 2022), as those areas are protected wilderness. Some ceremony spots also have seasonal restrictions and book quickly, so planning ahead is important.
Cherokee National Forest:
This national forest is the largest public area in Tennessee with 650,000 acres of forest space. It’s located just an hour outside of Chattanooga. This national forest is home to spots like Ocoee Rivers, Unaka Mountain, and Watauga Lake. There is a huge variety in these Tennessee elopement location vibes and scenery!
Fall Creek Falls State Park:
If you’re looking for variety in one location, Fall Creek Falls State Park is one of the strongest options in Tennessee.
With multiple waterfalls, overlooks, and accessible viewpoints, it allows couples to experience several different landscapes without needing to travel far between them.
Thinking about eloping with family for a beautiful micro-wedding? Go for it!
There are even some easy to access beautiful natural spaces that don’t require any hiking! My experience with my prior work with the Park events team was friendly. They are excited to work with couples looking to elope by themselves OR with family in the natural spaces around the park.
It’s also a location that works well for building a multi-day experience, especially when paired with nearby lodging or on-site accommodations.
The event team was also excited to help couples customize a plan to use their onsite facilities at the hotel for a slightly more traditional leaning reception. So, that is another great option if you want to blend family into your adventurous elopement!
And, whether you want to take advantage of:
- Beautiful, novel treehouse or unique cabin lodging a short distance away via my Enchanted Canopy Collection, or…
- Stay onsite in the Park’s onsite hotel (it’s lovely!)…
- Book the family-style cabins on the in-park lake, or…
- Traditional camp at the park’s campground…
…you can enjoy all the things that make Tennessee amazing in this one great location;-)
PRO TIP: These images at Fall Creek Falls were taken in February. Trees are still mostly sleeping, but the waterfalls are WIDE awake, lol. Summer and early fall season will see these flows reduce quite or bit or in some years, almost completely dry up. Time of year matters if you want this dramatic view!

Roan Mountain State Park:
Roan Mountain is a very popular mountain spot in Northeast Tennessee. This park is perfect for the couple looking for sweeping mountain views. A relatively easy walk takes you up to the top of a lush, gorgeous mountain bald, for views that stretch for miles! But, if you love the forest, you still win, as the area is still surrounded by beautiful forest. This location is in the Blue Ridge of the Appalachian Mountains, and is an amazing option.

Love the ideas of Great Smoky, but not into the restrictions, limited timing, or needing to spend thousands? Tired of looking at spots that still don’t really get the vibe you want?
Let me know what vibe you are looking for, and I’d love to help you find just the right spot to meet your needs!

Chattanooga Elopement Locations
Many of the elements couples are looking for, mountain views, water, forest, and accessibility, are all found within close range of Chattanooga.
That combination makes it one of the most versatile areas in Tennessee for building an elopement experience.
Prentice Cooper State Forest:
This bluff-top stretch of state forest has beautiful trails, lush ravines housing babbling brooks, and some TOP NOTCH overlooks that give with a panoramic view of the Tennessee River. One of my favorite overlooks is basically a small version of Horseshoe Bend, Utah, but in Tennessee? Here, seasonal cloud inversions can settle into the valley below, creating a layered landscape that feels completely different from a typical overlook. Surprisingly located only 45 minutes outside of Chattanooga, the overlooks & trails across Prentice Cooper State Forest can give your Tennessee Elopement a unique twist.
Pro Tip: A a multi-use forest, Prentice Cooper has seasonal, rotating closures for hunting. Navigating those considerations is part of the elopement concierge service I provide as we finalize your dates and elopement plans!
Lookout Mountain – Sunset Rock:
Lookout Mountain’s Sunset Rock offers strong views with a relatively short hike, making it one of the more accessible overlook options in the area.
Because it’s popular, weekday timing tends to work best for a more private experience.Chattanooga with only a short hike, you can see amazing views above the city. A favorite of locals & tourists alike, a midweek elopement or microwedding is advised.
PRO TIP: Love the feel and vibe of Sunset Rock, but not up for the crowds? Chattanooga is stacked with options with varying levels of hiking & accessibility that I’d love to help you explore as options. Location scouting & options are part of every package!
Signal Mountain – Signal Point:
With more parking than many areas, seasonally available restrooms, and epic views for you and your crew, the options on Signal Mountain will not disappoint! With a range of access options—from no-hike overlooks to moderate trails—this area works well for couples who want flexibility for themselves and their guests.
BONUS!
Cloudland Canyon: Located right outside of Chattanooga, TN (and technically in Georgia!) Cloudland Canyon is a must on this list. Unquestionably, there is a lot to see and do at Cloudland Canyon. Deep canyons and sandstone cliffs to explore, hiking, mountain biking, disc golf, creeks and waterfalls, and so much more.
With space for a micro wedding with your closest crew, or, an awesome Just Us adventure (or some combo of the two!), if you and your partner want all the outdoor activity around your adventure elopement, then this is a great choice! The bonus? There are some super fun accommodations with camping, cabins, and vacation rentals local, too!

TREEHOUSE WEDDING LOCATIONS in TENNESSEE:
One of the most overlooked options for Tennessee elopements is using unique lodging—like treehouses, cabins, or glamping sites—as the foundation for the experience.
These types of stays simplify logistics while creating a more private and immersive environment for your celebration.
When you want an amazing experience, but logistics that are much easier to navigate than a traditional wedding venue that works best for a huge wedding party, a treehouse elopement or micro wedding is absolutely the way!
My Enchanted Canopy Collection™ is a curated list of these types of stays, both in Tennessee and beyond, along with trusted vendors who are familiar with working with eloping couples.

SECRET TENNESSEE ELOPEMENT LOCATIONS:
There are also many lesser-known locations throughout Tennessee that don’t show up in typical searches.
Part of what I do is help couples find those spaces—places that align more closely with how they want the day to feel, not just what’s popular. Location scouting and custom location lists are a foundational part of EACH of my elopement concierge services in my elopement packages, whether you’re eloping in Tennessee or on the search for somewhere else in the US.
