“A place that is epic and vast. We want to feel tiny. But we want our crew, too - can’t imagine marrying without them!”
Day 1: Welcoming
By the time we got to Alaska, we already felt like old friends. Kym and Ash wanted to choose their own exact ceremony spot, so I located a family and elder-friendly trail with several possibilities.
In a quiet, unrushed walk together, they selected a natural amphitheater next to a boulder shaped like a heart, with a river cascading close by. Spot chosen, I dropped them off at their cocktail hour to welcome arriving family and friends.
Day 2: Hike with Their Kiddo, Custom Ceremony
Kym and Ash have a toddler, and they wanted their experience to include unhurried time as a family. I chose a trail to a glacial amphitheater so they could hike, skip rocks, and not feel a need to be anywhere except exactly where they were.
Later in the day, they returned to the lodge to get ready for their ceremony. Their best man and maid of honor blindfolded each of them so they could have a simultaneous ‘first look.’ The crew all took the micro-hike to the ceremony spot next to the heart-shaped rock, where their friend Penny led a ceremony she created specifically for them.
This included a handfasting practice (where the term ‘tie the knot’ comes from!). She tied symbolic ribbons of different colors around their hands, the last one representing the arrival of their baby. There was not a dry eye in the amphitheater.
Sundown brought a chef-made dinner and cake cutting, with Kym and Ash surprising guests with a swing dance they’d learned.
Day 3: “Just Us” Day with Heli Trip
Everything had been beautiful so far, but there hadn’t been time yet for truly private moments or private vows. That morning, they set off on a custom 4-hour heli tour (that went off map from standard tours, courtesy of a conversation with the pilot, who was delighted to be part of the adventure).
I followed quietly, paparazzi style, as they enjoyed high alpine views, ate wild blueberries, and toasted their union with glacier water. They read private vows next to a waterfall pool, and I quietly surprised them with a collection of love letters from friends and family who could not be there. They perched on the edge of an iceberg-filled lake to read well-wishes from those who loved them.
We skirted a stunning storm on the heli flight back to our lodging, huge grins under their headsets. Amazing memories, locked in forever.
